I’m not willing to concede this presidential election to President Obama just yet. But, I can’t help but the narrative brewing out there about Mitt Romney in the Midwest that is going to be tough to shake over the coming year.
With the next Republican debate coming up right outside Detroit, the DNC has launched a new ad attacking the Massachusetts governor with a Chrysler themed commercial that tells Guy Smiley to “Hit the Road!”
Now this ad in and of itself is not going to knock Mitt Romney off his game, which is officially: “I’m going to win this nomination because I know how to keep my mouth shut when everyone else is imploding”.
However, he is going to run into some serious problems as the number of flip-flops and off message statements he has about the rust belt economy start to add up. With his statements about the auto industry, one of the few objective economic victories of the Obama presidency, as well as his boneheaded support of Ohio Issue 2 (which is about to go down in flames today) Mitt might have a problem. If he’s not careful he just might flip-flop his way out of some tight races in the heartland – that’s if he doesn’t learn some more message discipline. There’s a disturbing touch of old school operation that plagues the Romney campaign since they appear ignorant to the fact that everything a candidate says can be heard, hash-tagged and re-holla!(ed) in the digital age.
