Well, I have to say that he did have a choice. This was the memorial service for the five officers that were killed in Dallas. He didn’t have to mention Alton Sterling. He didn’t have to mention Philando Castile. The president’s decision to connect those two events was incredibly courageous on his behalf, to say, look, these events are connected, and the lives of all of these people lost in this overall civil rights conflict are worth mentioning in this environment.

On Morning Edition on National Public Radio, political science professor Jason Johnson discussed the role of race relations, racial justice and the Black Lives Matter movement in the Democratic presidential primary.
“The question is — do black voters believe any of these people?” asked Jason Johnson, a political science professor at Hiram College in Ohio.
Johnson said the racial strife in the country is not an issue that’s going to peter out before Election Day; in fact, he said there’s likely going to be another racially charged shooting (or several) before then.
“The candidates are going to be forced to address these issues,” he said, “and the candidates that don’t address or can’t address them consistently are the ones who are going to end up losing out in November of 2016.”
