Last night NBC’s Chuck Todd hosted a crucial debate on Ohio’s crucial Issue 2 ballot initiative. Issue 2 is the brainchild of Republican Governor John Kasich (with a little help from the national party) and the issue has been one of the hottest, most contested policies in the state since Kasich came into power last fall.
Like many Republican governors who were elected in the GOP sweep of 2010, John Kasich ran as someone who would fix the economy. But, then he got sidetracked once getting into office with his all-out assault on unions. The Republican controlled state senate passed Senate Bill 5 which would end collective bargaining rights for state employees, end seniority, and reduce the avenues through which state employees could fight for workplace improvements. On November 7th Ohio voters will vote yes or no on Issue 2 to uphold or overturn Senate Bill 5 respectively. I provided political commentary on the debate, pointing out the major fibs that both sides dropped. In the end, looks like the bill is going to be overturned anyway, and Kasich’s political career has ended after only a year in office.
